Vascular Surgery Techniques

Vascular surgery is one of the youngest surgical disciplines, which was long considered a subspecialty but now functions as an independent medical specialty. Big names such as Kunlin, Crawford, De Bakey, Dos Santos, Leriche and many more have had a significant influence on it.

With their technical skills, surgeons play a central role in the treatment of patients with vascular diseases. By integrating other treatment techniques, they can take a conservative, interventional or surgical approach and combine different procedures. Surgical techniques form the basis of a solid training programme. Working with arteries and veins, needle holders and suture material, access routes to the vessels, anastomosis techniques and magnifying glasses are prerequisites for achieving good results in vascular surgery.

The vascular surgery techniques section ensures that a range of courses is available and continuously developed for colleagues, covering both general and highly specialised further training in vascular surgery. This has resulted in many courses for young professionals (common trunk), basic courses for surgeons and vascular surgeons in training, masterclasses for vascular surgeons and innovation courses. Among other things, the section organises the open surgery courses during the Summer Academy.
